RVShare is basically like AirBNB or Turo, but for RVs. I’m considering putting my trailer up on it over the summer for extra cash - Thinking out loud for pros and cons of using the service.
Pros:
Make $3-500 per weekend for very little work, using something that would just be sitting there doing nothing.
Cons:
Meeting weirdos off of the internet. Worrying about said weirdos treating my trailer like a rental unit. Weirdos probably doing it in my bed. Weirdos taking a dump in my bathroom. Extra wear & tear on trailer, plus risk of damage if somebody crashes it or otherwise breaks something.

I used to be involved with prepping rental motorhomes at a dealership, sometimes turning them around same-day. I don’t recall any coming back with severe abuse, but yeah some customers were messier than others.

i might... but id sure as hell have a spare mattress for guests
(im very protective of my bed... its used to me... and people not me using it would ruin its comfyness.... course.. im like that with my bike saddle too... so maybe i just have issues)
airbnb i’d never do tho.... this my home... not sharing (unless your friends or family)

With everything that’s involved with setting up a trailer I wouldn’t trust renting it out.
Too many dummies out there.

I’m all about the air BNB, but the one reservation I have with doing the same with RVs is that the build quality on RVs is significantly worse than cars or houses. Meaning they’re really not meant for wear and tear like the other two. Even boats are built much more solidly.
That said, a lot of the items wear just due to age, not use (e.g. roof sealant, etc.), so you could use the income to pay for repairs that you would have to spend money on anyway.
If I had a trailer or RV, I would do it, as long as the insurance was reasonable (e.g. they wreck it, I want to get paid).

Eh, I feel like any money I made would be spent fixing stuff they broke.

I work on fulltimer’s RVs for a living.. they’re all built like such shit that I’d be worried about other people using it. 90% of my customers have RVs that are less than 5 years old, cause that’s all the longer they last when used every day.

“Weirdos probably doing it in my bed. Weirdos taking a dump in my bathroom.”
#1 is a posibility.
#2 (hehe) is a certainty.

“Weirdos probably doing it in my bed.”
Doing *anal* in your bed. And possibly making porn. Or they may have disgusting fetishes.
“Weirdos taking a dump in my bathroom.”
And some of those dumps are probably explosive. Just imagine these two dropping a load down your toilet
... after having sex in your bed to ‘get things moving’...

I don’T really care about people using my stuff... Never have and probably never will... I would totally offer the turbo sa22c on Turo, same with the Lancia and heck, for a decent price and a GOOD deposit without my supervision, or for free under my supervision, I’d let pretty much I more or less know drive my father’s A110 once it (if it ever!) becomes mine... I really, REALLY don’t mind people using my stuff. Those things are meant to be used, so if I don’t use them, meh, go for it!

Which is nuts considering how much something like a class A RV costs new.

Do you have any insight on bus conversions versus purpose-built RVs? I really wanted to get a mid-’ 50s bus that had been converted, but which desperately needed to be updated. I figured the rolling hardware - engine, chassis, etc. - would be fine, but the living hardware - cabinets, couches, bed, bath, kitchen, etc. - might require a lot of work.

For what it’s worth - we actually used RVShare last summer to rent one and drive to a wedding in Montana. With two kids it was actually cheaper to rent a Class A then buy the plane tickets, plus the kids were able to move around if they got fidgety. I totally understand the part about how people would treat it though; we took a lot of care to make sure we didn’t break anything on it. However, the pictures the guy posted for the listing were clearly taken when he bought it and there was a little bit more wear and tear initially than we expected.
All that to say, we would definitely do it again - we’d just avoid that listing.

It’s probably about the same...RVs are built like crap, but that’s referring to the “home” part of motorhome. The chassis and driveline are probably the same used under buses

What about the body? It was my impression that the aluminum skin/styrofoam sandwich that makes up the RV body was inferior to the frame + skin body construction on an older bus. I thought the RV panels were just glued and screwed to a floor and that the perimeter frame of the bus body would be more robust.

Yea, the body of a bus conversion is probably much more robust as well.

I think that’s the whole point of renting somebody else’s mobile bedroom, and driving somewhere remote. For extra-messy “activities”.
Also, so the children can’t hear it.

Class A’s are far better built than big “luxury 5th wheels.” Class C’s are crap across the board. The pricing will reflect this....
The most robust motorhome I’ve ever seen was formerly a mobile banking outfit. Full one piece shell, and a chassis that could support a safe.
Old Chinook RV’s are pretty awesome. We got 5 winters out of one pulling a 16' cargo trailer around the oil fields of ND. I personally would not buy any modern RV.
